Sushi Roll Up & More about compulsive overeating

I've been craving Sushi for the last 3 weeks, but have been too lazy to make it.  I'm not sure why, since it really doesn't take a lot of effort...?

I decided to make a super yummy Sushi Wrap instead for lunch yesterday and I'm so glad I did.  I used the last of the daikon and spiralized it into noodles, chopped up some carrots and made a quick Tofu Salad to stuff inside with baby collards and avocado.  So so good!  It totally hit all of the flavor notes I was craving and filled me right up without being too heavy.  I love using Nori in place of bread.  Here's the recipe I used for the tofu salad:

Tofu Salad 
  • 4 ounces extra firm tofu, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon vegan mayo (I used my hickory smoked white bean spread, recipe coming the next time I make it) 
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion
  • 1 big clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • siracha to taste 
  • 1 tablespoon chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger
  • soy sauce or braggs to taste
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • Wasabi to taste
  • splash apple cider vinegar
To build the wrap, I placed the greens on the bottom, then the daikon, tofu salad, avocado and cilantro and wrapped it up.   For a Raw version, you could use either my Sprouted Lentil and Sunflower Pate or my Eggless Egg Salad.  

Simple. Delicious.Healthy. 

I am finding it MUCH easier to moderate my eating here.  Having a roommate helps... because I have told her about my issues with Compulsive Overeating.  I think sharing honestly with people is a HUGE step in overcoming this.  I find it MUCH harder to control myself when I go up to Portsmouth.. and when I stay in my X's house.  This is the house I used to live in and I think I immediately go back to feeling like I did when I felt trapped in an unhappy marriage.  I am learning a lot about myself with this move and so far am really really happy I took the chance to change my life! .. and just look at the Sunrise I get to see every single morning! 

For those of you who have issue with overeating, what do you find helps you the most? 


  1. Love this post! What do you do to the Nori (or what do you buy) to make it rollable. I find it often breaks since its dry.

    I definately overeat all the time, I would love to hear more about this.. I cannot tolerate gluten and have found that nothing fills me up like whole grains, which are not always available (if I am out and there are no proper GF meals)I am not vegetarian, but do not eat much meat.

I am still working on my overeating issues, and so far I can say that I win the battle- sometimes- the only thing that seems to work for me is a menu. if I plan what I am going to make for the day it really seems to help. and I have to keep my "trigger" foods out of the house (breads, muffins, doughnuts etc...anything made with overly processed wheat)

  5. Well done post! I definitely overeat at times ... usually when I'm really tired and/or stressed. Other times, I can tell any overeating is hormonally driven. I'm getting better at recognizing whether I need quiet and sleep or if I actually need food.

    That salad is gorgeous!

  6. First, the salad looks amazing and the sunsets also look good enough to eat. I am so happy for you and proud of you that you have made these changes for yourself. Looks like you're reaping the rewards already!

    I admire your courage in coming clean about compulsive overeating. It's amazing--when you reach out to the universe it really does reach back.

  7. Realizing that the feelings I was trying to avoid having by stuffing them down with food were not going to kill me. Just sitting with them and breathing through the panic, hurt, fear or anger took a lot of practice but realizing that I was adding to my misery by punishing my body by eating too much was a big step. People take it for granted how very hard it is to stop doing it unless they've been through it themselves. Confide in those that are understanding and compassionate above all. Ignore the well meaning but ignorant ones who try to give you advice like "just do it" or some other well meaning bunk. There aren't any tricks, it's coming to terms with yourself and loving who you are. You are worth it.

    Also, there are only specific foods I overeat and quite frankly, I just can't have them in the house. Any kind of cookies, crackers, chocolate - those kinds of things.

    I'm a stress eater...so to avoid over-eating I try to avoid stress eating. Taking time over meals and being very deliberate to keep those meals small during times of stress.

  10. I think that having a home that is free of all trigger foods is essential. Once a food becomes a trigger food, which happens a lot when old trigger foods are gone, then it needs to go also. Planning what you are going to eat and exercise for the day and then sticking to that plan is very powerful.

    Starting a meal with raw veggies/ salad, moving to cooked veggies, and then to a grain based dish helps to seriously limit the overconsumption of calories while upping the nutritional value of your diet. It's excellent in theory, but it's not easy to always follow through on.

    Removing oil from your diet is a very easy way to eliminate hundreds of empty calories from your diet. Eating tons of veggies, as you already do, really helps to give us a satiated feeling while also being uber healthy.

    I have found that it's pretty hard to overconsume vegan food that is oil free, added salt free, sugar free and processed food free (including white flours). When something is even a little oily plus salty or oily plus sweet, I just have a really hard time eating a reasonable portion. That's not the case with raw veggies though! THey don't call my name.

    I could go on and on, as I think you know, because it's what I blog about! And it's still a struggle, but getting better all the time.

  12. i used to have huge issues with overeating, and sometimes still do. i find that putting smaller portions on my plate helps (because if i'm full and there's still food on my plate, i WILL eat it), and when i snack, i must make portioned snacks - no eating out of the bag or dipping into the whole tub of hummus. oh, and somehow i managed to stop eating when i'm just bored, but i think that was sheer willpower. it's hard, because food can be so comforting (and so delicious).

  13. Thanks for your brave honesty. Two books that are opening my eyes a lot around compulsive eating are WHEN FOOD IS LOVE by Geneen Roth, and EAT TO LIVE by Joel Fuhrman, MD. My favorite crave-fighting meal is baked yams and steamed kale. The yams boost my blood sugar in a healthy way, the kale satisfies my need for nutrients, and all the fiber fills me up!
